Key Ingredients

A variety of ingredients for a teriyaki salmon bowl including salmon, avocado, cucumber, rice, and sauce arranged on a white surface.

See the recipe card below for the complete list of ingredients with exact quantities.

  • Teriyaki sauce: A good-quality teriyaki sauce adds the perfect balance of sweet and savory flavor. I like using Kikkoman, but homemade works great too.
  • Salmon: Use fresh, high-quality salmon and cut it into 1 to 2-inch pieces for the best texture. Pro tip: ask your fishmonger to remove the skin to save time.

Tips and Substitutions

  • Cut size matters: Cut salmon into 1 to 2-inch pieces for even cooking. If pieces vary in thickness, leave thinner portions slightly larger or cut into strips.
  • No need to flip: The salmon cooks evenly in the air fryer without flipping, but you can flip halfway through if desired.
  • Don’t overcrowd: Arrange salmon in a single layer so it cooks evenly and gets lightly caramelized.
  • Swap the base: Use brown rice or cauliflower rice instead of white rice.
  • Customize the vegetables: Try edamame, shredded cabbage, broccoli, or snap peas depending on what you have on hand.
  • Add extra flavor: Top with chili oil, sriracha, furikake, or spicy mayo for a little heat and extra flavor.

Air Fryer Teriyaki Salmon FAQs

Can I use frozen salmon for air fryer teriyaki salmon?

Yes, but for best results, thaw the salmon first so it can marinate properly and cook evenly.

How do I know when salmon is done in the air fryer?

The salmon should be opaque and flake easily with a fork. It should reach an internal temperature of about 125–130°F for tender, juicy results. The salmon will continue cooking as it rests.

Can I make teriyaki salmon without an air fryer?

Yes, you can bake the salmon at 400°F for 10 to 12 minutes, or until cooked through.

What kind of salmon should I use for air fryer teriyaki salmon?

Atlantic salmon works best because it’s thicker and more forgiving, which helps keep the salmon tender and juicy. Try to choose a piece with even thickness so it cooks evenly. Sockeye salmon can also be used, but it is leaner and thinner, so it may cook faster.

Equipment

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Marinate: Add salmon pieces to a bowl and toss with about ½ cup teriyaki sauce until evenly coated. Let marinate for 15 minutes.
  • Prep: Cook rice according to package instructions and prepare vegetables.
  • Air fry: Arrange salmon in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Cook at 375°F for 8 to 10 minutes, or until cooked through. No flipping is needed, but you can flip halfway through if desired.
  • Assemble: Divide rice between bowls, then top with salmon, cucumbers, carrots, avocado, and green onions. Drizzle with remaining teriyaki sauce and sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Notes

  • Teriyaki sauce: A good-quality bottled teriyaki sauce such as Kikkoman works great and saves time. You can also use homemade teriyaki sauce if you prefer.
  • Salmon prep: Ask your fishmonger to remove the skin to save time. You can also use skin-on salmon, but for this recipe, removing the skin makes the salmon easier to cut and eat in bowls.
  • Cut size matters: Cut salmon into 1 to 2-inch pieces for the best texture. If parts of the salmon are thinner, leave them slightly larger or cut into strips so they cook more evenly.
  • Customize your bowl: This recipe is very flexible. Try swapping in vegetables like edamame, shredded cabbage, broccoli, or snap peas depending on what you have on hand. Change out the white rice for brown rice or cauliflower rice.
  • Topping ideas: Add extra flavor with toppings like chili oil, sriracha, furikake, or sesame dressing.
  • Air fryer tip: Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket so the salmon cooks evenly and gets lightly caramelized.
  • Air fryer timing: Air fryer models can vary, so cook time may differ slightly. Check that the salmon is cooked through and flakes easily before serving.
  • Oven option: You can bake the salmon at 400°F for 10 to 12 minutes, or until cooked through.
  • Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For best results, store components separately and assemble before serving.
