This One Pan Deconstructed Lasagna Orzo has all of the familiar and comforting flavors of lasagna with none of the hassle of making lasagna!

In February 2022, I created an Orzo Recipe Series on TikTok where I created 8 new orzo recipes during the month of February. It was definitely a fan favorite! In honor of the 1 year anniversary of this series, I am creating a February Orzo Series Part 2!

Recipe Details

Traditionally, lasagna is a baked dish with wide strips of pasta (aka lasagna sheets) that is layered with meat, cheese, and tomato sauce. This recipe includes the same components – pasta, meat, cheese, and sauce, but without the inconvenience of layering each ingredient.

I used jarred marinara sauce to make this recipe even more quick and easy, but feel free to use your favorite homemade tomato sauce or check out my Easy Tomato Sauce recipe!

I used Hot Italian Sausage, but this recipe would also be delicious with Sweet Italian Sausage, ground beef, or ground turkey.

Dollop on Whole Milk Ricotta and scatter some Fresh Mozzarella pieces before baking to achieve that classic cheesy lasagna goodness!

Adding a little fresh basil to serve is an extra delicious touch that gives this dish some freshness.

This recipe can be easily customized. Add other seasonings such as a pinch of dried basil or dried oregano. You could add additional veggies such as some diced bell pepper along with the diced onion.

This Lasagna Orzo is the fifth recipe in my new series and I hope you love it!

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  • Heat a large high-rimmed oven-safe sauté pan over medium heat. Add the Italian Sausage with the casings removed. Break the sausage into small pieces using a wooden spoon and cook for about 5 minutes.
  • Add the diced onion and minced garlic and cook for 5 more minutes, stirring often.
  • Pour in the marinara sauce and water. Stir to combine. Add the uncooked orzo and stir to combine. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
  • Cook over medium low heat, stirring often so the orzo doesn't stick to the bottom of the pan. Add more water if needed to cook the orzo. This should take about 12-15 minutes.
  • Once the orzo is mostly cooked through, dollop spoonfuls of ricotta on top. Scatter the pieces of fresh mozzarella on top as well.
  • Transfer to the oven to bake for 5-10 minutes until the cheese is melted. Alternatively, you could cover with a lid and leave on the stove to melt.
  • Divide into bowls and serve with parmesan cheese and fresh basil as desired.
